Welcome

NurseAid, the 'Edith Cavell fund for Nurses' is the national charity helping nurses (including retired nurses), care assistants, (auxiliaries), and student nurses, throughout England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

We believe that no one who is, or ever was, a nurse should suffer hardship. Our overriding aim is to alleviate any such hardship. We do this by giving financial support to nurses facing difficult times.

Cavell Scholarshiphttp://www.nurseaid.org.uk//cavell-scholarship2010-06-29T15:08:52http://www.nurseaid.org.uk//cavell-scholarshipThe Edith Cavell scholarship

The Charity awards a travel scholarship every year. The purpose of the scholarship is to allow a nurse to travel to other countries to learn from colleagues working in the same field and to bring ideas back to the UK.

This has led to the development of many innovative services and the advancement of nursing practise within the UK. The award of the scholarship is administered through the Florence Nightingale Foundation.

Scholars who have received this award have reported that it has helped to advance their own careers as well as contributing to improvements in patient care.

As our most recent scholar, Dr. Alun Jones, has said:

'This opportunity to study internationally has enriched my knowledge, inspired my research and heightened my appreciation of the sensitivities involved with providing and receiving mental health studies'.

The most recent scholars and their areas of study, including that of Dr. Jones,  can be seen below. Their full reports, where available, can be viewed by following the associated links.

2009 - Alun Jones studied Understanding Key Concerns for Patient Involvement with Mental Health Services Education Locations: Carnarvon and Perth: Western Australia.

2008 - Scott Bennett studied continuity planning within nursing during times of extended major incidents in Canada, Singapore and Hong Kong.

2007 - Julie Taylor studied the role of the advanced practitioner in continence care in Australia.

2007 - Angela Walsh studied models of community nursing services for children in Ireland.

2006 - Brian Boag studied the impact of nursing care in the emergency department in the USA.

Thank you for wanting to get involved with NurseAid, we really appreciate your support.

Our ambition is to help as many Nurses as we can - year after year - but we can only do that with your help. We count on individuals and corporate partners to join the NurseAid team and make a positive difference to nurses in need.

One of the simplest ways you can help is by making a donation. No amount you are able to offer us is too small and if you can manage to donate a set amount of money to us each month you can be sure that you're regular giving is making a difference for nurses not just today and tomorrow, but for years to come. regular gifts

Fundraise for NurseAid

Your time can be as important to us as money, and volunteers (offer to volunteer) are of great value to us in many of the events we organise. Running in events such as the London Marathon or Great Northern - or a local fun run could involve lots of people running for NurseAid.

Or you could help us by organising your own fundraising event. Perhaps you could do something within your community, or your hospital to raise money for NurseAid? This helps us not only because it raises vital funds for our work, but it also helps raise our profile and lets the public know who we are and what we do.

For many people, raising money for charity is combined with a personal challenge such as a marathon, half-marathon, climb to the summit of the UK's highest peaks, or a trek along the Great Wall of China. And if you want to do just that get in touch

However, you can also play your part in your everyday working life. If your company asks for nominations for Charity of the Year, or if we are already short-listed and you have the chance to vote - please remember to tick the NurseAid box!

If you'd like any more information about how you can get involved, please call us on 01527 595999 or email Donna Treanor, our Fundraising Director, who will be happy to help you.

Share Givinghttp://www.nurseaid.org.uk//get-involved/share-giving2010-06-03T17:52:17http://www.nurseaid.org.uk//get-involved/share-givingShare Giving

Why give shares to NurseAid?

Giving shares is a highly tax efficient way to support a charity. Shares worth somewhere around £100 million are given to charities each year. Such donations attract income tax relief, enjoy exemption from capital gains tax- and the tax relief goes to the donor. This allows the donor to choose who benefits from this relief as a result of the charitable support.

A basic rate taxpayer giving shares worth £1,000 can reclaim £220: so to the donor, the cost would be £780 but to us, the value would be £1,000. For a higher rate taxpayer, the cost of giving to NurseAid a gift of shares worth £1,000 would be just £600. In spite of recent changes to inheritance tax, for larger estates giving shares still offers a way to reduce an inheritance tax burden.

We always put money into our Welfare grants budget as promptly as possible, so we sell all these shares straight away and use the proceeds directly to support nurses in need.

How to do it

A gift of shares of any size can help us. Share giving is a little known but wonderful way to support NurseAid. If you would like to know more, please call 01527 595999 and ask to speak to Donna Treanor, our Fundraising Director.

Payroll Givinghttp://www.nurseaid.org.uk//get-involved/payroll-giving2010-06-03T17:52:00http://www.nurseaid.org.uk//get-involved/payroll-givingDonations and Payroll Giving

Making a one-off donation directly to us either by debit/credit card or cheque may not be as much fun as taking part in a challenge event or volunteering, but it could be crucial to some of the nurses and retired nurses we support.

A simple donation to us will mean that a nurse who is in financial need through illness, an accident or through family circumstances can receive the support they deserve. - often after a career of caring, selflessly for others.

How to donate

You can donate online now, safely and securely.

Make a regular donation by direct debit, (download a DD form) a really simple but effective way to give. Please complete the form and send it to us (freepost address below) or call us on 01527 595999.

Call us on 01527 595999 to make a donation over the phone using your debit or credit card or complete our on-line donation form.

Post us a cheque payable to NurseAid to:

NurseAid, Grosvenor House, Prospect Hill, Redditch, Worcestershire B97 4DL

Payroll Giving

One of the most simple and tax efficient ways to give to NurseAidis through your monthly salary - and it helps us because we rely on a regular stream of income to help as many nurses as we can.

Because monthly payroll giving donations are taken from your gross salary, a £10 donation to NurseAid each month would cost you just £8, and only £6 for a higher-rate tax payer. And because it goes out of your salary automatically, you'll hardly notice the difference.

Many companies also choose to match the amounts contributed by their employees, which could make your donation even more valuable.

Ask your company if they run a Payroll Giving scheme. If they do, you simply need to complete the forms they give you. If your company doesn't have a scheme, the Charities Aid Foundation can offer them advice on 01732 520 000 or contact our fundraising team on 01527 595999 or email them.

Legacieshttp://www.nurseaid.org.uk//get-involved/legacies2010-06-03T17:48:10http://www.nurseaid.org.uk//get-involved/legaciesLegacies

Why not leave your mark on the future by giving a donation to NurseAid in your will? It is a gift which can help those people who have devoted their lives to helping others. We need your support to support them in times of need.

Your thoughtful act can help future generations of nurses to know that through your generosity, NurseAid is there to help them when they need support themselves.

There are a number of different types of legacy gift (bequest) you can make.

NurseAid can provide you with useful information on legacies and making or changing your will. We would be happy to send you our legacy pack (click here), or call Donna on 01527 595999 or email her.

Why make a will?

Making a Will is something that most of us put off doing; it seems complicated or we are too young, or we can always do it tomorrow.

But if we want to be sure about how our money and belongings are distributed when we die, then it is vital to make one - for our own sakes and for those of our family and friends.

Writing your will

You can write your Will yourself, but a Will is a legally binding document and so we would recommend that you use the services of a professional to assist you through what can sometimes be a complex process.

In addition to drafting your Will, a qualified lawyer will also be able to advise on ways of reducing your inheritance tax liability - for instance, by making tax-exempt gifts in your lifetime and donations to charities like NurseAid.

Donations in lieu of flowers

These days many people are asking that a donation be given to a charity instead of flowers at a funeral. This is another way you could help NurseAid - see our In Memoriam page.

In Memoriamhttp://www.nurseaid.org.uk//get-involved/in-memoriam2010-06-03T17:47:45http://www.nurseaid.org.uk//get-involved/in-memoriamDonate in Memory

Making a donation in memory of a loved one is a positive way of commemorating a life, whilst helping us to make the lives of those who have spent their lives caring for others, better.
• Make a donation online
• Make a donation by post or phone
• Gift Aid - Make sure you make the most of your donation

Many people also like to mark significant days like birthdays or anniversaries with a gift to NurseAid.

Your Donation

Once we have received your in memoriam donation, we will always send you a letter of thanks.

We also send a personal letter to the next of kin, which lists all of the donors and the total amount raised in memory of their loved one. Please be assured that individual amounts of gifts are never disclosed.

More Information

If you have any questions about making a donation in memory, please contact Fundraising Director, Donna Treanor by email or phone her on 01527 595999.

Fundraising for NurseAid

Fundraising can be lots of fun and provide valuable lessons in community spirit - teaching young people social responsibility and learning of the importance of caring for others.

If your hospital, school or college would like to get involved with fundraising we would love to have your support and you can be sure any money raised will go towards nurses and student nurses who really need it.

If your hospital, school or college has a "charity of the year" we would really appreciate it if you would put NurseAid forward. We benefit a lot from becoming the focus of everyone's efforts for a whole year.

For more information and supporting materials, please contact us on 01527 595999 or email our Fundraising Director, Donna Treanor

The difference we makehttp://www.nurseaid.org.uk//the-difference-we-make2010-06-18T08:31:48http://www.nurseaid.org.uk//the-difference-we-makeThe difference we make

Why do people need NurseAid?
Nurses seek our help because they are finding it difficult to cope - frequently this can be due to illness or an accident that pushes people to their financial limits. Some people need our help for just a short time to get them over a bad patch - others need our support for longer. As nurses, we are used to being the one helping others - it can be very difficult to seek help for ourselves. No-one ever intends to be in the situation of having to look for support. At NurseAid we understand this, and never judge, but always listen with compassion and understanding. All applications are treated in the strictest of confidence.

To see some of the stories of people who we have helped. see the NurseAid brochure

If you are having doubts about applying look at some of our Testimonials and to hear why other nurses have applied to NurseAid.

What sort of help can we give?
NurseAid can make single, one off grants to help with a variety of things such as adaptations to the home, replacing white goods, help with decorating etc. In some circumstances we can help with bills. We ask you what sort of help you require and see if we can help. In many cases we can offer a regular weekly grant to help with day to day living costs.

Receiving a grant from NurseAid will not affect your entitlement to benefits.

NurseAid can also work with other charities to contribute to the costs of larger items such as installing chairlifts, purchasing electric scooters, house repairs or adaptations.

What can't we do?
NurseAid cannot help with debts, nursing home fees, bankruptcy fees or funeral expenses. We cannot help with educational costs or top up nursing bursaries. We do not make loans and cannot help people who are not resident in the UK.

Who can we help?
We can help nurses of all ages, (from those who are older and are living on limited means to those who, through no fault of their own, are finding it difficult to cope), healthcare assistants (nursing auxiliaries) and student nurses.

We give both single and regular grants to nurses in need. They are awarded for a number of reasons

This chart shows the reasons for the grants awarded during 2008

new grants chart

As can be seen the reasons for grants are varied but over a quarter are for general living expenses. NurseAid awards a large proportion of its grant budget to providing regular grants to nurses - almost 300 people receive our regular grants. Over a quarter of these people are living on incomes of less than £8,000 per year.

During 2008 we contacted the people receiving a regular grant to see how the grant helped.

The results, as can be seen below, show that the grants are used for the very basics of life - food, bills, clothing ….

How regular grants are used

When returning the questionnaire on how their regular grants are used, many beneficiaries took the time to comment on the difference the grant made to their lives:-

"I'm very grateful for all the help NurseAid has given to me. I would be destitute without it. I still have problems coping with my difficulties, but if I wasn't getting your help I'd never be able to manage".

Andrea, 58, Cheltenham - receiving £30 per week

"I am very grateful for my regular grant, before receiving it; it was a struggle especially to have some help with the garden and some one to give me a hand with electricity and minor things in the house. It helps to pay for a bit of help."

Lily, 82, Bexhill on Sea - receiving £30 per week.

"I use my regular grant to help pay towards the basic costs of living (gas, electricity, food, clothing etc.) NB Clothing is usually purchased from charity shops when we can afford it, although this is not very often"

Enid, 76, Norwich - receiving £30 per week.

About Ushttp://www.nurseaid.org.uk//about-us2010-02-10T15:18:17http://www.nurseaid.org.uk//about-usAbout Us

The Nurseaid vision is to provide vital support to all nurses during difficult times. Whether the matter is financial pressures resulting from family problems, accidents or illness or needing a helping hand in hard times, NurseAid is there to support all UK nurses in need through crisis or trauma.

Some people need our financial help for just a short time to ease them through a bad patch; others need our support for longer. Nurses are used to being the ones who help others and it can be very difficult for them to seek help themselves - nobody ever intends to be in the situation of having to ask for support. At NurseAid we understand this and never judge, but always listen with compassion and understanding.

NurseAid is 'The Nurses Charity'.

About Edith Cavellhttp://www.nurseaid.org.uk//about-us/about-edith-cavell2010-02-10T15:18:17http://www.nurseaid.org.uk//about-us/about-edith-cavellAbout Edith Cavell

Edith Cavell was born the daughter of the Rector of Swardeston, Norfolk, in 1865. She trained as a nurse at the London Hospital. Before the First World War she went to Belgium, where she became the first matron of the Berkendael Medical Institute in Brussels.

Following the German Army invasion of Belgium in 1914, Berkendael became a Red Cross Hospital, with German soldiers receiving the same attention as Belgians. Many of the captured Allied soldiers who were there managed to escape, with Edith Cavell's active assistance. She was arrested by the local German authorities and charged with having personally aided in the escape of some 200 soldiers.

Edith Cavell was kept in solitary confinement for ten weeks. She was told that her companions had confessed and perhaps naively, she signed a confession, which was to become the basis for her trial. She was tried by court-martial, found guilty and was sentenced to death. Her execution by firing squad on 12th October 1915 received worldwide press coverage.

In memory of Edith Cavell, the Trustees, in conjunction with Nurses of The Royal London Hospital, lay a wreath at her memorial statue in St Martins Square, London, nearest to the date of her execution in October.

A longer biography and more information on Edith Cavell can be found at www.edithcavell.org.uk

Edith Cavell was also featured in a book entitled Courage: Eight Portraits by Gordon Brown

How NurseAid Beganhttp://www.nurseaid.org.uk//about-us/how-nurseaid-began2010-02-10T15:18:17http://www.nurseaid.org.uk//about-us/how-nurseaid-beganHow NurseAid began

NurseAid is the working name of the charity 'Edith Cavell Fund for Nurses' named in honour of the heroic nurse who was executed  on October 12th 1914  for helping  Allied Forces to escape the Germans.

To read about Edith Cavell, her life and work click here. The Edith Cavell Fund for Nurses has existed since 1917.

During the First World War appeals were made in major newspapers for donations to help nurses returning from the war. The Nation's Fund for Nurses was set up to provide relief for individual nurses in times of sickness or disablement. The Nation's Fund also gave an endowment for the new College of Nursing.

In 1922 the Tribute Fund took over the administration of the Edith Cavell Homes of Rest and the charity became known as 'The Edith Cavell and Nation's Fund for Nurses'.

Over the years the fund took over the management of a number of smaller charities helping nurses which were gradually incorporated into the main charity.

In 2002 the charity adopted the working name of NurseAid in order to make the aims of the charity more clear and to make it more accessible to those who may be using internet searches to look for help. At this time the Fund incorporated the charity 'The Nurses Benefit Fund for East Lancashire'. In 2006, the Nurses Fund for Nurses and in 2007, The Groves Trust charities were incorporated.

The objectives of the charity have also been widened over the years in order that it can provide assistance to not only Registered Nurses but also to student nurses in crisis and nursing auxiliaries.

NurseAid continues to grow and to reach increasing numbers of nurses who need our help. If you can support us with a donation to help us support more nurses, please click here

David Hart.JPG"No-one who is, or has ever been a nurse should suffer hardship" is our maxim at NurseAid. Our overriding aim is to support all , health care assistants (auxiliaries) and student nurses in need.

Our Welfare Grants Committee regularly reviews policies and procedures to ensure that our resources are being directed to those nurses facing the most severe difficulties, particularly those with very low incomes of £8,000 per year or less. More than a quarter of those who received a regular grant during the year were living below this income level.

Despite difficult times during the recent economic upheaval, I am happy to report that the charity has continued its invaluable work, supporting as many nurses as possible.

Demand for our services is increasing and we know that only the generosity and support of people like you, prevents us from turning away nurses in need, nurses who have selflessly devoted their careers to care for others.

We believe that no-one who is, or who has ever been, a nurse should suffer hardship and through your support we can make that belief a reality.

David Hart
