About the trust

Cavell Nurses’ Trust supports the UK’s 650,000 registered nurses, midwives, health care assistants together with retired and student nurses who need financial help following illness, injury and other difficulties throughout England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

It has provided financial support worth more than £2.5 million over the last five years to thousands of working and retired nurses, health care assistants and student nurses in need.

We believe that nursing and midwifery was and still is one of the noblest of all professions and Cavell Nurses’ Trust will continue to help any nurse who is facing difficulty or crisis. Our support is offered in the form of financial grants and advice. Most of the grants we give go to nurses who face the most severe difficulties. Our beneficiaries are from all over the UK.

All about Edith Cavell

Cavell Nurses’ Trust provides vital support to all UK nurses during very difficult times. We offer help to registered nurses, midwives, health care assistants, student nurses and retired nurses who have given a lifetime of caring and compassion.

Cavell Nurses’ Trust, formerly known as NurseAid, was originally set up in 1915 in memory of British nurse Edith Cavell who is celebrated for her work in World War I. She cared for wounded soldiers irrespective of nationality and was arrested after helping some 200 Allied soldiers escape into neutral Holland. Edith Cavell was subsequently court martialled, found guilty of treason and sentenced to death. Despite international pressure for mercy, she was shot by a firing squad.

She was hailed a martyr and heroine.

Our Awards

The Cavell Nurses Scholarship Awards is a scheme that has been launched for the first time in the UK. Aimed at recognising exceptional student nurses and midwives, we will be awarding six winners travel scholarship awards of £1,500 and for the Edith Cavell Leadership award of £2,000 at a ceremony held at the Fishmongers’ Hall in London on the 30th April 2012.

The Awards are designed to help nursing and midwifery students at the start of their careers and were open to students currently studying nursing or midwifery on undergraduate/postgraduate or diploma courses at Universities in the UK.

The Cavell Nurses’ Trust Scholarship Awards are supported by The Eranda Foundation and GlaxoSmithKline.
